Writers measure their success in different ways. Some are content to have crafted poetry or prose that faithfully expresses their authorial intent, while others may define success by reception or audience reaction. Medium has its own metrics to define the success of an individual piece, author, or publication. Publications look to the number of individual subscribers. Stories, series, and responses may be rated according to the number of unique views, reads, or claps. Authors may define success by the number of followers they gain, the number of articles accepted to major publications or the number of reactions or responses to a given piece of writing.

Regardless of how anyone defines successful writing, the very act of trying to achieve success on Medium has become its own cottage industry. Seriously; try searching for “how to write Medium” or any other variation of that search query and see what you get. I’ll wait!

Now that I have evidence on my side let’s think about this. Consider your relationship to writing. Is it easy now, or difficult? Has it always been this way? For novice writers, what have you done to work on your craft? For experienced writers, if it has become easier over time, what have you done to make it so?
