This is the ninth in a fourteen-part series on the Icelandic Jólasveinar, or Yule Lads. For an introduction and the full list of mischievous Christmas imps, and one terrifying Christmas cat, you should read the following:

Icelandic Name: Bjúgnakrækir

English Translation: Sausage-Swiper

Arrival: December 20

Departure: January 2

The ninth was Sausage Swiper,

a shifty pilferer.

He climbed up to the rafters

and raided food from there.

Sitting on a crossbeam

in soot and in smoke,

he fed himself on sausage

fit for gentlefolk.
