This is the second in a fourteen-part series on the Icelandic Jólasveinar, or Yule Lads. For an introduction and the full list of mischievous Christmas imps, and one terrifying Christmas cat, you should read the following:

Icelandic Name: Giljagaur

English Translation: Gully Gawk

Arrival: December 13

Departure: December 26

The second was Gully Gawk,

gray his head and mien.

He snuck into the cow barn

from his craggy ravine.

Hiding in the stalls,

he would steal the milk, while

the milkmaid gave the cowherd

a meaningful smile.
