This is the fifth in a fourteen-part series on the Icelandic Jólasveinar, or Yule Lads. For an introduction and the full list of mischievous Christmas imps, and one terrifying Christmas cat, you should read the following:

Icelandic Name: Pottaskefill

English Translation: Pot-Scraper

Arrival: December 16

Departure: December 29

Pot Scraper, the fifth one,

was a funny sort of chap.

When kids were given scrapings,

he’d come to the door and tap.

And they would rush to see

if there really was a guest.

Then he hurried to the pot

and had a scrapingfest.
