This is the first in a fourteen-part series on the Icelandic Jólasveinar, or Yule Lads. For an introduction and the full list of mischievous Christmas imps, and one terrifying Christmas cat, you should read the following:

Icelandic Name: Stekkjarstaur

English Translation: Sheep-Cote Clod or Gimpy

Arrival: December 12

Departure: December 25

The first of them was Sheep-Cote Clod.

He came stiff as wood,

to pray upon the farmer´s sheep

as far as he could.

He wished to suck the ewes,

but it was no accident

he couldnt; he had stiff knees

- not too convenient.
