Every year at about this time, life starts to get a little more real. As far back as I can remember, the first weeks of August bring with it the kind of rumble-in-the-pit-of-your-stomach feeling that accompanies an imminent and uncertain change. You would think that thirty-seven years on this planet would have given me the perspective to do away with this mild anxiety, or at least would have numbed me to its effects. But no. Every year at this time, since I was a kid, I’ve felt acutely the onset of this seasonal condition: the first-day-of-school jitters.
